Chapter 17

KAIRON

“Kairon?”

“Yes, Bolin?”

“Do you ever wonder how we ended up here?”

Kairon looked down at the cup of cold tea the turtle had given him ten minutes ago. They were seated on a roof three blocks from Slotte’s factory and were two days into their assassination planning. Kairon wasn’t sure where the Bixi procured the raspberry tea in his cup, which was sending up wafts of fruity goodness, and he wasn’t sure if it was worth asking. He probably stole it, a habit of most Chancler employees. They all started off as thieves or murderers and eventually chose to turn it into a profession.

“Do you mean physically here, on this roof? Or under Chancler's employ?” Kairon ventured, gesturing toward the sloped surface of the three-story salt shop they were seated on. The turtle had metal spikes on the bottom of his feet, giving him traction. Kairon, meanwhile, had placed some coins under his boots to hold himself up with telekinesis.

Bolin stared at Kairon with his big eyes, then sheepishly shook his head. “Never mind.”

Was he having second thoughts about the mission? “Speaking of here…” Kairon took the final sip of his drink, then handed the ceramic cup back to Bolin. “We should head back. If Serena catches us doing this, she’ll—”

“I’ll kick you two off this roof for shirking your duties.”

Both the Namorodo and Bixi cringed. Serena appeared behind them a moment later. She must have climbed the ladder while they weren’t looking. Kairon needed to improve his awareness of his surroundings. He hadn’t heard her at all.

“We were just taking a break,” Bolin whispered, already pulling back into his shell, his shaking hands rattling the cups.

“And I have this.” Kairon held up his binoculars. “We’re still watching. We’re just doing it from a distance.” He pointed at the factory, which was perfectly in sight, albeit a few streets down.

“Do you want to save the girl or not?” Serena whispered.

Kairon swallowed the anger building up inside him. Of course, he did. “You told me to wait for a week, so that’s what I’m doing.” He huffed and peered through the binoculars again, annoyed that she had insisted on that timeline. “I’m waiting.”

The roof was silent for a minute, the tension tight enough to be cut, then Serena tapped both of them on the shoulder and motioned for them to turn around.

“We won’t need to wait until the end of the week,” she said softly, her normally sassy and sarcastic tone gone. Once she had their attention, she pulled the factory blueprints out of her pocket. “I have a plan and Chancler approved it.”

Kairon lowered his binoculars. “Go on.”

“I’m not going to repeat myself so listen carefully.” Serena motioned for them to come closer. “This plan relies on Titania being with us. Kairon, did she agree to join?”

“She did.” She wouldn't be as big as they expected, but he didn’t need to mention that part. If this meant they could start the rescue mission earlier, he didn’t mind twisting the truth.

“Good. This
